Excitement is building at the Institute as we prepare to launch teaching on the first module of our Certificate Program by Distance Learning, entitled Foundations in Orthodox History and Praxis. Newly designed and constructed, students on this module will, starting in September, become conversant in the contours of earliest Orthodox Christian history, the Apostolic period of mission and pastoral growth, and the era of transition between the Apostolic Fathers and the rise of the Apologists in the second century AD — all while learning how these ancient themes resonate with the Orthodox life as it is lived today.
The Foundations in Orthodox History & Praxis module introduces students to the diverse richness of Orthodoxy in her earliest generations: from the Apostolic Pentecost through the Apologists. Beginning with a lecture on the many questions associated with early Church studies, the module traces out key contours in early Orthodoxy — including the Jewish roots of the Church, the nature of Pentecostal spirit and mission, the early origins of the Church’s conciliar nature, unity in ministry and martyrdom, and a host of other themes.
Students will be guided through their studies by chief module instructors, Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg) and Archpriest Josiah Trenham.
Materials are covered through a rich collection of dynamic distance learning resources, including video lectures; one-on-one live video chat sessions with instructors; audio lectures with visual slides; on- and off-line reading; and student learning becomes interactive and dynamic through forum-based discussions, writing assignments, peer interactions and a collection of other tools.
